For more than 50 years, students at Kyoto University have posted signs on this wall to promote student activities, protest university and government policies and raise their voices in a society where a raised voice is an affront. So when the university announced plans to raze the wall and put in a new entrance to the school, students rebelled. They erected a towering platform, opened what they call the Stone Wall Cafe and began proselytizing to anyone who will stop and listen.
